Chapter Thirteen

It was Thursday afternoon, and Hadley was returning home from a meeting with the Pioneer Valley Hospital human resources department. She walked into the kitchen, whistling a cheerful tune. Her interview had gone swimmingly, and with a little luck, she was a mere pile of paperwork away from being assigned to her first shift. It would feel so amazing to get back to work after almost a month off. In the meantime, as the baby monitor on the counter sprang to life and sent her racing up the stairs, she was reminded she had a different job to keep her on her toes.

“Come on, buddy.” Hadley scooped the bundle of joy up from his crib and into her arms. “Did you have a nice nap?”

Owen, warm and cuddly in his cotton footed sleeper, cooed in her ear.

She changed his diaper without much fuss, quite pleased with her newfound efficiency, not to mention how adept she’d become at avoiding any additional shots to the face. This whole baby thing wasn’t nearly as daunting as it had been in the beginning.

On her way downstairs, Hadley heard the plop of mail arriving through the slot in the door. Her heart beat a little faster.

“Shall we see what we got?” she asked Owen in a singsong voice that masked her apprehension. She studied the stack of junk mail, unable to decide if she should feel relieved. “Nothing yet.”

Which was strange. Brandy Swanson’s assistant had sworn she was mailing the letter requesting Tyne’s detailed financial reports last Thursday. It was Wednesday now, and still, it hadn’t arrived. At least Hadley hadn’t seen it, and Tyne hadn’t mentioned it.

If Tyne had already opened it, there was no way she would’ve kept quiet. Tyne would’ve read Hadley the riot act, and she probably would’ve deserved it, too. Did it break the letter of the law of their agreement? Maybe not. But it was getting harder for Hadley to remain convinced it didn’t break the spirit. If she were in Tyne’s shoes, Hadley would be royally pissed.

Hadley left the supermarket flyers and credit card offers where they’d landed, bouncing Owen on her hip. “Let’s go get you some lunch. How about bananas? You like those.”

She put Owen in his chair and pulled a banana and zucchini baby food pouch from the cupboard, along with the largest bib she could find. Meal time with Owen was a full body experience, especially when bananas were on offer.

When they’d first cleaned out Kayleigh and Ryan’s apartment, there had been a few dozen pouches of homemade food in the freezer. When they’d run out, Tyne had wanted to make more, but Hadley talked her out of it, buying an assortment of these fancy ones from the organic market instead. What she hadn’t said was when Owen came to live with her in Boston, he’d have to get used to store-bought food, anyway. She had neither the time nor the inclination to boil and mush it herself.

Hadley refused to feel guilty about it.
